If your house has a wood shake roof, most jurisdictions will not allow you to install solar because it is a fire hazard.

Even if your jurisdiction doesn’t outright prohibit solar for wood shake roofs, installers may not take your project due to possible safety issues. For this situation, the best option for you is to re-roof with another material. Keep in mind, you would be able to claim the 30% federal tax credit on the cost of the re-roof where solar would go.

If you don’t want to re-roof, you could opt for a ground mount. If you have enough open space on your property that gets good sunlight, you can keep your roof and go solar.
